Sound Off on Corrupt Practices
On another article, Gary Mandude made the following comment:
Corruption is endemic in Thailand with every school, government or private, a little feudel kingdom. Instead of continuing this tirade against one man, how about setting your laser sights on the corrupt practices that have driven some of the best and most talented teachers out of Thailand?
He’s right. We do need to focus on these issues, not just in Thailand, but throughout the TEFL World.
So now, here is not only Gary’s opportunity, but everyone else’s opportunity to talk about corrupt practices in schools and the TEFL industry as a whole.

Why is it that so many English teachers have trouble spelling words correctly?
It’s ‘feudal’, not ‘feudel’.
Greetings from Germany:
I am an American citizen, currently residing in Germany. I am contemplating
enrolling in a TEFL course, soon. I have heard and read information
that Asian employers do not like to hire older teachers. Is there any truth
to this exclamation, and if true, why? Older teachers have more experience
than the younger generation and they are more reliable. In addition,
younger teachers can be seen at various bars in Bangkok, for example
on school nights. Older teachers have had their time in the sun, and should
be given a chance to be hired along with their younger counterparts as long
as their performance is commendable. I hold a New York State Teaching
License, have obtained my Master’s Degree in Education/Social Studies and
a Bachelor’s Degree in History. In addition, I am retired from the United States
Air Force, 70 years young, and mentally/physically fit. Therefore, do
you think it would behoove me to still enroll in a TEFL course, taking a chance
to be hired by an Asian employer, preferably in Bangkok, or will I never be
hired because of my age?
Please reply to this message at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Dennis P. Habern, Msgt, USAF, Retired
