Dust Your Sandles Off

I think many of us can feel very downtrodden after experiencing a bad experience in a job. It’s not unusual, especially when you give everything you’ve got to a job that then spits you out like you are worthless. It’s just not right. I think there’s some debate on where the blame lies, but if you let their bad actions affect you in a negative way, then you are at fault.

You may not have the ability to change the way they wronged you, but you do have the ability to change your own reaction. If you have taken precautions and you have done right by Heavenly Father, then there is no reason to take it upon you. In fact, that’s what the evil one would like you to do. The evil one wants you to take that anger upon you and let it dwell inside of you.

Don’t take upon the anger, dust your sandles off and move on. Do warn others, report that you were wronged to the Watchman on the Tower so others can avoid the pit. But then move on, don’t dwell on the wrong. Don’t let it affect your relationships. If the wrong is affecting you, then you are at fault.

Do you have insurance?

Insurance seems to be the hot button issue over on ELT World today. It seems that a teacher in Korea was involved in a house fire. It caused him severe burns, a huge medical bill and now it is being reported that it cost him his life. His employer didn’t provide him insurance and it has left his family with a huge medical bill.

What can I say? These employers and these recruiters bring over fresh graduates and lure them with all kind of fake promises and then the teacher is left to live in substandard housing and are not given proper benefits. I wish I could say it was something new or it was out of the ordinary, but TEFL teachers are vulnerable workers. Many of them lack proper insurance and in fact, they work for schools that would just as soon let them go than to use any available insurance.

Here’s my warning: If you are going abroad to teach. Don’t. If you don’t want to listen to me then please ask all the right questions, find a good school, have your own insurance and by all means always have an exit strategy. If you can’t immediately get enough cash to buy a ticket out of situation then you shouldn’t be in the TEFL game.

Thank You TEFL Websites

Why do people take a lower salary than they should? I think about this all the time. It seems that teachers are notorious for this. They will accept a lower pay for some private for profit institution and think they are doing the students some kind of favor. Yeah right.

In reality what happens is that is your lower salary allows the school owner to take on a mistress or get a new BMW. You think you are doing well by your students, but just because you are accepting a lower salary doesn’t mean that they are paying less. Your school is in business and that means they are going to charge as much as they can and still keep students in desks.

That means they’re also going to pay you as little as they can get away. With a huge supply of teachers getting off the banana boat each day, your salary is never going to increase to what it should.

If you like your low, depressed salaries than say thank you to the plethora of TEFL websites that are encouraging untrained and inexperienced teachers to join in a TEFL adventure. I am glad that I am not battling for a cowboy job at some low wage language institute.

New Direction

Lately I have been giving a lot of thought to what I think TEFLWatch is all about. I have heeded the advice of others and teachers who are concerned with getting the best possible deal. I have decided that to be the most effective site that TEFLWatch can be, I must expand the focus on this site to fit more with the lifestyle of teachers all around the world, not just in one location and not just on schools. I need to have a holistic approach to the entire teaching profession and serve as a mentoring and information source for all teachers, not matter what their needs or desires are.

To this end, I will begin focusing many of our articles on things that can improve the lifestyle of teachers and improve our knowledge about our profession. I know some readers will not like the change, but I think it is a change that will build a much stronger site that can give teachers information.

We have a new comment policy here. We haven’t had one listed before, but it is probably time to come up with a policy and begin enforcing it, both on new comments and previous comments. Over the next few weeks, I will be reviewing all left comments to ensure that they conform to these new rules. No new comments will be approved that do not meet these requirements. If the comment is otherwise acceptable, I may edit to remove items that violate the rules.
