Clearing the Mess
The reports I keep hearing out of Thailand are pure BS. I don’t know why TEFL teachers are putting up with so much BS, but they are. I got images right now of teachers in shirt and ties running out of the side gate of decrepit old schools with immigration police in hot pursuit. Why would anyone go through that?
It seems that Thai schools are going through a second round of immigration raids. Immigration police is coming in with lists of teachers who they believe to have fake documentation and are taking them to jail. After jail they will be deported out Thailand. Who knows if they will be able to go back to their wives and families?
Don’t try to blame it on the teachers, blame it on the flooser administration of stingy schools. Some schools encourage their teachers to get fake documents. The schools that do care about the qualifications are not doing even cursory checks on applicant paperwork. They don’t bother checking references and they don’t bother checking to see if the documentation is genuine or not. Sure it ain’t easy to do, but the onus is on the employer to hire qualified workers. If they don’t care enough to check things out then they get what they get. Don’t Thais have a saying, som nam na?
Administrators need to start coming up with higher salaries for qualified teachers. Maybe if they can get 20 applications for every opening, they can take the time to find teachers with genuine qualifications? Maybe they need to , I don’t know. You tell me. Tell me how Thailand can get out of the mess it is in now.
