I think it is time for at least one TEFL website to make a stand about some of the current events in the TEFL world. John Karr’s recent arrest for the killing of Jon Benet Ramsey has sparked an outcry about just who is teaching TEFL. If you would believe the media hype, you would think that TEFL teachers in Thailand are a sordid bunch and that in depth background checks are the only way to protect the children. This is completely off base with reality.

It seems like our Hall of Shame school, BCC, and St Joseph’s Convent, are both publicly saying that they only hire teachers on a two week trial period and then decide whether they want to hire the teacher or not. What a load of crock. For anyone out there curious, Thai schools do not hire on a trial basis. All evidence suggests that John Karr worked long term at both establishments, at least several months.

I know I have a lot of people coming in for information on John Karr, the killer of Jon Benet Ramsey. What I can offer is this: According to AP and our own posters, he taught at Bangkok Christian College and St Joseph’s Convent. Bangkok Christian College is a Hall of Shame school that seems to attract a criminal element.

The boy about 13 years old showed in white lettering on his red t-shirt the words “No Rules.” Another teenaged boy sported white lettering on a black t-shirt: “Punk’s Not Dead.” A young woman, showing on her black t-shirt the white lettering: “I know my phone number. How about you?”
