If you could make a lot of money doing this, the Gov't would be doing it. It is a great hobby but very few make a living mining. It's comments like "I was hearing that there is an untold amount of gold in the hills just ready to be picked up" tells me you have never done this work. It is work, very hard and dirty work. I have mined all over Calif for the last 30 years and have found some nice gold, but I I would never quit "the day job". Get all the facts before you glamorize this as a New Job.
