Get Pesos
Currently, I am busy moving over some of the unique forum posts from the TEFLWatch Forums over to my new Get Pesos Forum. My goal is to move just about every pertinent post over to Get Pesos where the information can reside for as long as it needs to. This is good news to anyone interested in making sure that information stays available.
I am still not certain how I will classify a post as pertinent, but I guess I am the only one who can make that call at this stage. It should be good.
At The End Of A TEFL Career
I am saddened by news reports that I have been reading lately concerning former TEFL teachers ending up in bad situations. They invested years of their life in teaching and now are left penniless, without a pension and with very little hope for the future. Some have even resorted to suicide. It’s a very sad thing indeed.
It’s easy to say what they should have done to avoid the problems, but should have done is cold solace when you are at the end of a TEFL career. I wish there was something I could say or do, but about all I can come up with is to advise TEFL newbies to take a long hard look at the end of a TEFL career before they start in one.
Thank You TEFL Websites
Why do people take a lower salary than they should? I think about this all the time. It seems that teachers are notorious for this. They will accept a lower pay for some private for profit institution and think they are doing the students some kind of favor. Yeah right.
In reality what happens is that is your lower salary allows the school owner to take on a mistress or get a new BMW. You think you are doing well by your students, but just because you are accepting a lower salary doesn’t mean that they are paying less. Your school is in business and that means they are going to charge as much as they can and still keep students in desks.
That means they’re also going to pay you as little as they can get away. With a huge supply of teachers getting off the banana boat each day, your salary is never going to increase to what it should.
If you like your low, depressed salaries than say thank you to the plethora of TEFL websites that are encouraging untrained and inexperienced teachers to join in a TEFL adventure. I am glad that I am not battling for a cowboy job at some low wage language institute.
TEFLWatch Resources for Teachers
In our forums, one of our moderators has embarked on an ambitious plan to create a huge resource area for teachers. It is quite significant at this stage and it is growing every day. Where else can you get a free lesson plan for an EFL math or science class? (If you know where else, add a comment or a link! The more resources the better!)
If you would like to add your lesson plans, ideas and activities, please do. This is a free resource and can turn into something that we as teachers can use on a daily basis. Check out our resource room for teachers.
