Teaching with Lee Roy Week 1
I guess this is my first of hopefully many weekly columns. It ain’t anything special, just me talking about my week spent teaching in Asia, in Thailand in particular, at least right now. I have been doin’ this teachin’ thang for a while now and it is a way to pays the bills and show me a good time. Maybe I can help y’all learn a little more about what it is like to be a teacher. Maybe not? But least ways we can have us some fun.
I like teachin’. It is fun, I work at a government secondary school near Bangkok, Thailand, at least I have been for 6 weeks. They pay is awesome, 30,000 baht sure beats the heck out of working back home at Wal-mart. I got only $6 an hour back at Wal-mart. Oh yeah, y’all don’t know where I am from, do ya? I am from a small town in West Texas, USA. So, I got myself this old job teaching English to mattayom students, they say these kids are the intelligent ones, but I don’t know. Still tryin’ to figure out what EP means, but it seems like Extra Pay is about the closest definition I can find.
This week has been just plain crapola. Ya know what I mean? First off we got ourselves a 5 day weekend. Now I don’t mind getting myself a 5 day weekend, but I do hate coming back on Wednesday. Them students just don’t want to learn and I just don’t want to teach. See, I figure if I teach on Monday and Tuesday halfway decent, I can coast rest of the week. But now they want me to party for 5 days and then drag myself in for classes for 3 days? What gives with that? Don’t they know I have a life, I didn’t come halfway around the world just to teach, I came here to have fun. Actually, I came because it is either work at Wal-Mart stockin’ them shelves with deodorant, maxipads and shampoo or come on over here to do some drinkin’, do some funnin’, and get it all paid by a school where all I have to do is teach English for a few hours every day. Sounds like a good racket, but this week they done changed it on me.
See, I could have probably dealt with startin’ my week on Wednesday, but I showed up on Wednesday, I smiled while they raised their flag and sang their song. Then we get ourselves in the office and that weasly little runt who calls himself Director of Studies announced that he done came up with an idea to make our teachin’ better. See he decided that we should prepare up reports on all of our students and give them to him by Thursday afternoon. Heck, I don’t even know half of my students. 30 students in each class, 4 classes and you expect me to know their names? Well, you can tell how my day went.
Do you believe in magic? That is what my Thai assistant asked me. She told me how Thai teachers handle all of that bs, magic. Them reports don’t mean nothing, just paper to satisfy the boss. Thanks Miss Suttida. She didn’t need to say anything more, I know all about that kind of magic. All of my reports got done on time, but still the only way I could really get the student reports done was with a whole lot of guessing. Ya know what though? They can’t be that serious cuz if they was really serious they would give us proper time to do a proper job. If you jerk us around on the time, then you get a jerked off job, plain and simple, least wise country logic wise.
Ah well, it is Friday now and another week has passed by now. Friday night is fun night and now I can head on out and have me some fun. You know Bangkok kind of fun. I know you are feelin’ me, hehehe, least wise I know that pretty young girl will be. Keep a grinning until next week.
