Teaching with Lee Roy Week 2

6pm on Sunday night, you just gotta hate that time. Every Sunday when I look at the clock and see that it is 6pm, I know one thing. My weekend has ended and all of a sudden it is a regular day. I usually get home every day at 5:30pm. So Sunday at 6pm, it is just like a regular day. It seems like I ain’t got no time at all. All sense of fun and hope has done left me and I begin to reflect on just how goll darn short my weekend was. What did I do with my weekend? Heck if I can remember. All I know is that the weekend is done over and it is now just like a regular day.

Yeah, I can remember a few things. I remember going out on Friday night and hitting the bars. I remember that pretty little girl named Lek who wanted me to buy her drinks. I also remember she wasn’t none too happy when I told her that I was a teacher. She knows about us teachers and she knows we get paid at the end of the month. About all the money I got left by the middle of the month is enough to buy me drinks, not buy a drink for a girl and much less give her what she wants to go on home with me. Judging by her reaction, I think she knows lots of teachers like me in the same boat. She done told me to come back and see her at the end of the month when I won’t be such a cheap charlie.

Getting up on Monday morning is just a goll darn chore. The alarm goes off at 630 and I always ignore it. I get out of bed at 7:00 am and get my shower and get dressed in damn school uniform. Yeah, they make us farangs wear a school uniform, what gives with that? I guess it is better than that goll darn blue smock they made us wear at Wal-Mart with the stupid buttons they made us put on us. And my school ain’t made us do a school cheer yet. Not like the Wal-Mart cheer. Give me a W, give me an A. They actually made me lead that Wal-Mart cheer once. I still feel like a loser to this day. I guess the school uniform ain’t that bad.

My school makes us be there by 7:30 to sign in a little book. My school is pretty damn good because they have a clock right next to the sign in books and the clock is always a little slow. If the time is really 7:34, the clock says 7:28. Naturally most us use that time. The boss done put that clock there so teachers could see what time it was they needed to sign in. They is also being very generous by giving us an extra 6 minutes. You notice that I said most of us use that time because there are a couple of “honest” teachers. They is always there a bit early but they insist on adding 2, 3, 8 minutes to their sign in times. If the clock says 7:22, they sign in at 7:30. That means everyone who comes in after them, even if they come in at 7:23 have to sign in at 7:30. Hey but why am I worried about it? Well on Thursday, the boss had a talk to several of us teachers and done reminded us that we need to be accurate with the sign in time because he don’t believe that 7 teachers all signed in at the same time. He believes that 3 or 4 of us is late on a regular basis. Anyone know a good motorcycle taxi driver?

This weekend, I am going on a visa run. See, Thailand only gives me 30 days at a time in the country, so every month, I got to go to the border and get 30 more days, well they say 30 days, but I done counted them and it is only 29. So they can’t count in Thailand, that is ok. But it don’t change the fact that I got to go to the border and get more time in Thailand. Normally, I go to Poipet to cross the border, but that is an all day trip and costs me more than 2000 baht once you get all the expenses calculated. Then there is dealing with all the bs in the border to Cambodia. Not only that but you lose two pages in your passport. This time I am taking the advice of a friend and doing a Malaysia run. I will be flying down on Saturday morning to Hat Yai and then crossing the border at Sadao. I will come back on an afternoon flight back home. Total cost will be about the same, I think. This is just an experiment so next week I will report back to you all. Until then, take care.
