Helping You Learn More About Helping Yourself

Thank You TEFL Websites

Why do people take a lower salary than they should? I think about this all the time. It seems that teachers are notorious for this. They will accept a lower pay for some private for profit institution and think they are doing the students some kind of favor. Yeah right.

In reality what happens is that is your lower salary allows the school owner to take on a mistress or get a new BMW. You think you are doing well by your students, but just because you are accepting a lower salary doesn’t mean that they are paying less. Your school is in business and that means they are going to charge as much as they can and still keep students in desks.

That means they’re also going to pay you as little as they can get away. With a huge supply of teachers getting off the banana boat each day, your salary is never going to increase to what it should.

If you like your low, depressed salaries than say thank you to the plethora of TEFL websites that are encouraging untrained and inexperienced teachers to join in a TEFL adventure. I am glad that I am not battling for a cowboy job at some low wage language institute.

Good thread Rico.
Keep them coming.

Can you show me a company anywhere in the world that is trying to get away with paying its employees the least bit possible?

The difference is that job seekers should look for schools/employers that understand the value of their talents. And that goes for any hiring situation in the world.

Do not many of the blogs run by the owner os this site also actively encourage people to enter the TEWFL world as a teacher?

Well, Ez Mart is one. The companies that hire Burmese workers in Thailand, large agricultural companies in the Central Valley of California, just about about every company is trying to pay their workers the least amount they can. That’s the nature of the beast, but I guess you are unable to understand that one.

The only way that job seekers can find the good schools you talk about is by asking the right questions and checking out websites like TEFLWatch, a site you have been knocking for months.

I find these comments very interesting coming from someone who is alleged to have been receiving money from a Hall of Shame school to tout them on the net.

And for Rebut, I do not run any blogs that encourage people to enter the TEFL profession. I am sorry to disappoint you.

“I find these comments very interesting coming from someone who is alleged to have been receiving money from a Hall of Shame school to tout them on the net.”

I find these comments to be a bit stupid from someone who lacks the crediblitly to post publicly or engage me publicly. But lies are easy to tell …. and everyday I learn a little bit more about you Greg. The difference between me and you is I don’t really give a shit….but I’m sure you’ve learned a lot about me by now and realize I don’t play games….but if you’re still willing…I can go for round two. Its up to you.

And I do agree with you…you don’t run blogs that encourage people to go into the TEFL profession….you just run a bunch of websites to gain a bit of money from those of us that do.

Oh really?
a simple follow through on the embedded links in the owners sigs on many sites takes you to many, a simply follow through on the whois entry for this site again leads you to many.
this site and its sister forum carries ads for teaching jobs and tefl courses, ok the ads are not active but they are certainly passively encouraging people to enter the profession.

Numero Uno, It seems like your criticisim, Topper, that I am posting publicly and I am engaging you publicly. I have no desire for contention or anger, that is up to you. You have expressed a lot of anger and deceit over the months and I am hopeful that you will be able to devote your energy to more productive pursuits. I think everyone know that you are being less than honest.

You make claims, but you are unwilling to back them up one iota and then beg to have the forum threads where you make claims deleted or otherwise removed. That’s ok, but you do need to be honest.

I am glad that you agree that I don’t run websites encouraging people to enter the TEFL profession. I am interested in helping people make an informed decision, even if it is to avoid a school that someone is touting.

I urge everyone to follow rebut’s advice and follow through any link that I have embedded in my signature anywhere. You will see that I am not actively touting anyone to enter the TEFL profession. Thanks, rebut for bringing that up and allowing people to see the truth of what I post.

People generally end up in TEFL because they need to support themselves while living abroad in a country where they probably don’t dominate the language, unless you count the UK summer school market of course.

Blame can be thrown around, the schools, the backpacker looking for beer money, the student who doesn’t check into his school’s/teacher’s qualifications etc.

The million dollar question is what can those of us who have chosen/need to do this for a living and expect a decent wage do? Last I checked, local authorities frown on drowning backpackers.
